Autumn test 2: PartA (fiction)

This text is from

Alice inWonderland

by Lewis Carroll.

Alice in Wonderland

Alicewasbeginning to get very tiredof sittingbyher sisteron thebank, andofhaving

nothing todo.Onceor twice shehadpeeped into thebookher sisterwas reading, but

ithadnopicturesor conversations in it, ‘andwhat is theuseof abook,’ thoughtAlice,

‘withoutpicturesor conversations?’

So shewas considering inherownmind (aswell as she could, for thedaymade

her feel very sleepy and stupid),whether thepleasureofmaking adaisy-chainwouldbe

worth the troubleof gettingup andpicking thedaisies, when suddenly aWhiteRabbit

withpink eyes ran closebyher.

Therewasnothing so very remarkable in that, nordidAlice think it so verymuch

outof theway tohear theRabbit say to itself, ‘Ohdear!Ohdear! I shallbe too late!’But

when theRabbit actually took awatchoutof itswaistcoat-pocket and looked at it and

thenhurriedon,Alice started toher feet, for itflashed acrosshermind that shehad

neverbefore seen a rabbitwith either awaistcoat-pocket,or awatch to takeoutof it,

and, burningwith curiosity, she ran across thefield after it andwas just in time to see

itpopdown a large rabbit-hole,under thehedge. In anothermoment,downwentAlice

after it!

The rabbit-holewent straighton like a tunnel for someway and thendipped

suddenlydown, so suddenly thatAlicehadnot amoment to think about stopping

herselfbefore she foundherself fallingdownwhat seemed tobe a verydeepwell.

Either thewellwas verydeep,or she fell very slowly, for shehadplentyof time, as

shewentdown, to look abouther. First, she tried tomakeoutwhat shewas coming to,

but itwas toodark to see anything; then she looked at the sidesof thewell andnoticed

that theywerefilledwith cupboards andbook-shelves;here and there she sawmaps and

pictureshunguponpegs. She tookdown a jar fromoneof the shelves as shepassed. It

was labelled ‘ORANGEMARMALADE,’but, toher greatdisappointment, itwas empty;

shedidnot like todrop the jar, somanaged toput it intooneof the cupboards as she fell

past it.

Down, down, down!Would the fallnever come to an end?Therewasnothing else

todo, soAlice soonbegan talking toherself. “Dinah’llmissme verymuch to-night,

I should think!” (Dinahwas the cat.) “Ihope they’ll rememberher saucerofmilk at

tea-time.Dinah,mydear, Iwish youweredownherewithme!”Alice felt that shewas

dozingoff, when suddenly, thump! thump!down she cameupon aheapof sticks and

dry leaves, and the fallwasover.

Alicewasnot abithurt, and she jumpedup in amoment. She lookedup, but itwas

alldarkoverhead;beforeherwas another longpassage and theWhiteRabbitwas still
