During the summer, parents are often looking for exciting places to go and things to do to entertain their children close to home, that won't cost a fortune. Libraries are a useful resource. They often provide free book trails or challenges, invite authors to read, and hold dressing up sessions for younger children. Local community groups regularly provide sports and arts and craft activities at reduced costs or for a small donation.
If you are willing to look further afield, and spend a little money to keep your children entertained, trips to the theatre, theme parks and popular museums offer endless opportunities to distract and amuse children of all ages. Child-friendly activity centres provide a wide range of outdoor activities from canoeing and abseiling to archery and climbing. Children can visit on a daily basis or stay, parent free, overnight! Although slightly more expensive, these mini breaks do provide the opportunity for children to become independent and make a new set of friends.
