Only royal prisoners had their heads chopped off in the Tower of London. Among them were two of Henry VIII's wives, Anne Boleyn, who died in 1536, and Catherine Howard who died in 1542.

In 1671, an Irish adventurer named Captain Blood made his famous attempt to steal the Crown Jewels from the Martin Tower. In the same year, alligators were kept in the moat, which was drained in 1845.

In 1816, George III was given a grizzly bear for the Tower. The animals in the Tower had very little space and people were cruel to them. The menagerie was sent to London Zoo in 1832.
