Let's practise

Britain faces a repeat of last winter's flood chaos with three months of torrential downpours on the way.

Flood warnings are already in place for the south-west after last week's heavy rain. Five people had to be rescued from their stranded cars at the weekend and floods closed the road yesterday between Exmouth and Exeter in Devon.

Last winter was the wettest on record. More than 20 inches of rain fell across the UK, the highest total since records began in 1910.

Although this year will have some way to go to beat that, early signals suggest exceptionally wet weather over the next three months. The Met Office said, 'Spells of wet and windy weather may be more frequent than is typical.'
