What you need to know
To achieve 100 you need to identify and comment on a writer’s choice of words and phrases and how they enhance meaning.
- Writers use language in different ways to keep readers interested and enhance meaning.
- Writers use imagery to create vivid images in readers' minds. One way of doing this is to use precise words (for example, writing willow instead of tree and writing staggered instead of walked).
- Another way writers create imagery is to use figurative language. This is language that has a different meaning from the literal or 'usual' meaning. Examples include simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia and personification.
