What you need to know
To achieve 100+ you need to use inverted commas to show direct speech.
- Inverted commas are sometimes called speech marks. Inverted commas are put around what the speaker says, e.g. Daisy said, 'I love swimming.' 'I love swimming,' said Daisy. 'I love swimming,' said Daisy, 'and diving.' 'I love swimming and diving,' said Daisy. 'I feel at home in the water.'
- A new speech sentence starts with a capital letter (even if it is in the middle of another sentence).
- Separate what was said from the speaker with a comma, unless there is already a ? or !
- Use a comma after each part of the sentence, but look out for whether the speech requires a question or exclamation mark instead.
- Punctuation linked to speech always goes inside the speech marks.
