What you need to know
To achieve 100 you need to recognise the present and past perfect tenses and be able to construct these verb forms.
- Perfect tenses add information to the verb in order to be more precise about when the action happened.
- Past perfect: We had booked our tickets early in case they sold out quickly had booked indicates that this action happened before sold out.
- Present perfect: I have lived in London since I was born have lived tells us that the action began in the past, but is still continuing in the present. In contrast, I lived in London indicates that the action is finished, and means I no longer live in London.
- Test questions may ask you to:
choose the correct tenses to complete a sentence;
change the tense of a verb;
write a past perfect sentence to show in which order actions happened.
