Let's practise

- Read the question carefully and read it again. What is it asking you to do?
- Find the clauses in each sentence by finding the verbs.
go learned/had mastered feed/go go
- Some of the sentences may only have one verb and so only have a main clause (and no subordinate clause).
The first and last sentences only have a main clause. The word after is not followed by a verb, just a word or phrase. The second and third sentences have a main clause and a subordinate clause.
- Find the main clause by checking which part of the sentence can work independently.
Emily learned to play the piano and We always go for a walk make sense on their own.
- Check that other parts of the sentence are subordination clauses by finding the conjunction.
After she had mastered… and After I feed... begin with a conjunction and do not make sense on their own.
- Tick the second and third sentences, then check your answer.
Emily learned to play piano after she had mastered the guitar.
After I feed my dog, we always go for a walk.
